Qualia takes its name from the philosophical term for the private, felt quality of experience. The series engages the Japanese concept of MA (間), the pause or space between, and draws on natural forms such as droplets, branches and rock. Each piece is hand-built and glazed in layers. Finger-pressed lines and layered glaze passages work like a mantra, repetition as visual rhythm. Nishigawara describes the works as a diary of the subconscious, a record of intuitive, unspoken feelings that emerge through the act of making.
